1st Edition vs Shadowless Charizard: How to Tell the Difference
The visual differences between Pokémon Base Set 1st Edition, Shadowless, and Unlimited — what to look for on the holo, the copyright line, the foil pattern, and the rarity stamp.
Pokémon Base Set was printed three times in 1999 in English, and the three print runs sell for wildly different prices. A 1st Edition Shadowless Charizard in PSA 10 is a six-figure card. An Unlimited PSA 10 Charizard is mid-five-figures. An Unlimited raw is $200–$500. This guide gives you the four visual checks to tell them apart in under 30 seconds.
The four checks, in order of speed
- The 1st Edition stamp— A small black "EDITION 1" logo to the left of the Pokémon's artwork inside a bordered black oval. Present only on 1st Edition. If you see it, you're done — it is 1st Edition.
- The drop shadow on the artwork frame — Look at the right edge of the artwork box. Shadowless and 1st Edition have nodrop shadow. Unlimited has a black shadow under the right and bottom edges.
- The copyright line— Bottom-right of the card. Shadowless and 1st Edition: "©1995, 96, 98 Nintendo, Creatures, GAMEFREAK". Unlimited adds ", 99" to the end: "©1995, 96, 98, 99 Nintendo".
- The HP font — Shadowless and 1st Edition use a thinner HP number font; Unlimited HP digits are slightly bolder.
How they relate
A common misconception is that Shadowless is a separate set. It is not. Shadowless is the second print run of Base Set, after the 1st Edition print run but before the Unlimited print run. Visually it looks almost identical to 1st Edition (no drop shadow, same copyright) — minus the 1st Edition stamp.
- 1st Edition: stamp + no shadow + ©95, 96, 98
- Shadowless: no stamp + no shadow + ©95, 96, 98
- Unlimited: no stamp + shadow + ©95, 96, 98, 99
The trap cards
Machamp 1st Edition
Machamp is the only Pokémon that was 1st Edition-only in the Unlimited run. Every Machamp from the 2-Player Starter Set is stamped 1st Edition regardless of when it was printed. That makes 1st Edition Machamp by far the cheapest 1st Edition Holo — a Shadowless Machamp does not exist.
Reverse-search holos
Several recent counterfeit runs add a 1st Edition stamp to a genuine Shadowless print. The stamp itself is usually too bold, slightly off-center, or sits over the artwork frame instead of beside it. Use a 10× loupe (or the Card Snap fake-detection flag) on any high-value stamp.
How Card Snap handles all three print runs
